Out for a walk this evening, I saw this small moth on a garden wall. It was dark, but I happened to have my compact camera with me, so I took a couple of flash photos of it. I was expecting a drab brown little thing, but under tha flash it appears quite colourful, with greenish wings surrounding a brick-red central panel; two prominent dark spots and two smaller spots. I was not familiar with this one at all, but it turns out to be the bee moth Aphemia sociella, a pyralid moth whose larva lives in the hives of wasps and bumble bees.
