Today I travelled to the Malvern Hills, on the border of Worcestershire and Herefordshire. I was expecting to see dozens of red kites as I passed Oxford on the way up, but I saw a grand total of one, hovering above the treetops beside the A40, and a couple of other large birds of prey in the distance, that may have been kites or possibly buzzards
