I’ve seen a couple of these moths around the warehouse in the last few days. This is the common footman, as opposed to a very similar moth named the scarce footman. The common is certainly more common in this area, although neither is exactly scarce. The two species have very similar markings, but the common holds its wings fairly flat when at rest, while the scarce holds them rolled up in a kind of overall cigar shape.
I noticed today that the fenced-off patch of wild ground is being cleared, apparently in readiness in case we decide to build a new warehouse on it. It has necessitated removing a metal fence panel so they can get the diggers in, but as there was nobody actually working there, I wandered in and had a mosey through what remains of the long grass and wild flowers. There are a lot of butterflies around, although nothing unusual. I also found several nursery webs, mostly unguarded, but this one here had a spider sentinel, the aptly-named nursery web spider Pisaura mirabilis.
