Hover fly larva
Hover fly larva

This repellent, grey little lump of gel is a hover fly larva believe it or not. It’s only a centimetre or so long, but I’m told they can eat up to 50 aphids a day, and are thus the gardener’s friend.

It isn't until I look at some of these pictures that it dawns on me what a short sighted dunce I am for not considering the rest of an insects life cycle. I simply accept what I see. I adore hoverflies and never once stopped to consider how they come to be.
